When Love Comes to Town

Three years ago I bought a piece of graphic art. It was during a dark time, the narrowing just before change blows life wide open, and I was looking for a message – a sign.

That is exactly what I found. A sign. Bold white letters painted on a creamy background spelling out a message in all caps, one I was yearning for: “This life is yours to create. Be true to who you are, recognize the beauty that surrounds you, be the architect of your own destiny.”

Every morning and every night for the last three years I have brushed my teeth in front of that sign: be true, be aware, be creative. Somewhere along the line I think I got it – and what I got was do what you love. Trying to live that insight, I started ChakraBabe. It is miraculous what love can do. Not the “oh baby, I can’t live without you” kind – but the discipline of love. Getting up every day orienting your thoughts and actions around doing what you love. And, more critically, loving what you do.

Between them, the rhythm of those two choices has gently rocked my days, raising the level of the engagement one small increment at a time. Eventually distinctions disappear – presence, work, duty, prayer, the lines fade and it all takes on a sheen of love.

Chakrababe is now online and open for business. Go to www.chakrababe.com and see what the artists there have crafted for your chakra balance. Hopefully, you will love what you find, raising the level of the ChakraBabe community higher with every treasured item you call yours.

Why Does Beauty Matter?

sunriseIt is everywhere – in the curve of a road or a child’s cheek, in the juxtaposition of color and form gracing the twilit sky. It is sometimes imperfect and almost always impermanent, elevating our days through its existence.

In trying to understand the experience of beauty, German poet Friedrich Schiller observed human nature motivated by two principle longings, sense and form. The drive to sense the world based in immediate gratification, and the drive to impart form on the world based in coherence and rational order. Desires that often conflict with one another.

Being present in the moment can be at odds with ideas of responsibility, duty and perseverance.

But Schiller believed we needed both drives for balance –postulating that absolute beauty was experienced when objects or emotions resonated with both needs at the same time. Experiencing beauty this way, he thought, could teach us how to be both immediate and eternal, both present and accountable.

I believe beauty is often found in the gaps, in the spaces between what we expect and what we encounter. Being present is the currency of its recognition. Years ago, I learned the anchoring influence of recognizing just one beautiful thing a day. This practice seeded gratitude and influenced my perspective during some of the most trying times of my life.

The ChakraBabe project is about beauty – the beauty of balance. The healing effect of reconciling our duality by capturing beauty and celebrating it, by finding it in ourselves as we explore and understand our energetic nature – and the blessing of living on our own terms. It is with this intent I now wake up each morning to wrestle with WordPress and angst over Shopify.

Our launch is almost here. It is my desire you will recognize the beauty I have stumbled across, sought in obscure corners, collected and brought to you for consideration with ChakraBabe. As the project grows and the community coalesces, I realize the launch is only a new beginning, with fresh perspectives, greater depth and further growth just around the curve.

I look forward to meeting you there.

Shouting Out

Some days start rough. You’ve gone to bed the night before aching like your run from the flu has tanked just before the finish line, no last minute vitamin or herbal remedy to the rescue, the body seeking solace in a dark room and uninterrupted day sleep. But there are school lunches to be made and the cable is down.

This is a post about communication in its most fundamental form.

Fifth Chakra Reinforcement – Turquoise Glass Earrings

Why is the cable down? It is continually problematic – my fifth chakra spinning backwards at the thought of dealing with the cable provider yet again. That means no phone, no Wi-fi, not even the comfort of pajama work when work, whether you feel like it or not, is inevitable. So you’re up. A tentative engagement with the world at best, but movement.

In an unheard of turn of events, the cable company truck arrives five minutes early. The doorbell rings and a young woman – for the first time, as it is always and forever some dude talking a cable hook-up language I do not speak – this girl with a soft demeanor and androgynous uniform steps into my home. She is Anna, and she sees what no cable guy has seen so far, repairing the connection and boosting the signal just like that, no rough stuff, no holes in the wall or dirt on my floor. She is quiet and mercifully effective. Angel of Wireless Signal – she turns to me to speak and, it is a comment on the decor! With her soft gaze, efficiency and observation, she restored not only my ability to communicate with the world, but my desire to do so.

Anna, this post is dedicated to your grace and your aptitude, may your salary be commiserate with both.

Choice Points – The Third Chakra

Poetry has been my inner witness for years. The instrument that allowed me to experience the challenges and joys of my passage through life without being overrun by emotion or unnecessary drama.

The concept is called “sakshi” in Sanskrit, the capacity each of us has to disengage from our thoughts or emotions and observe them. Through poetry, the process of observation – though the event or occurrence might be painful or difficult – has always brought me back around to beauty, an essence I somehow find at the root of most everything.

The choice of transmutation through observation and expression. And the choice to share those writings with the world. This week I published a short collection of poems on my blog – others, hopefully to follow. Please take a moment to witness my witness. Who can say where it will take us?

In the third chakra one finds self esteem and sense of responsibility. It also anchors our feelings of identity.

Here we undertake a journey of personal growth, shifting from the illusions of limited mind and conditioned opinion into true choice and vast creative options.

Here we determine our direction.

Holding, releasing, redeeming energy to a higher use.

I have spent my life steeped in love. It has followed me doggedly, through blessings like the profound relationship with my child I am lucky enough to experience every day, through more questionable ones that caused me to believe my relationship picker was definitely broken. But the capacity to love was always there. Like those weighted toys you punch and they pop back up – I have been the definition of resilience, able to revert to my original size and shape after being stretched, squeezed and twisted. Ready for love again, ready for relationship.

Thankfully, over the last few years I moved into a more discreet phase of my life. Partly due to having little time for imprudent choices, partly due to fostering a stronger connection with the Universe. I wake up every morning and ask for intuitive guidance, in energetic issues in general and particularly through the tangle of relationship possibilities.

This week that guidance took me deep into the ochre heart of southern Utah. Not because I knew where I was going, but because my intuition would have it no other way. As in most spirit journeys, I knew only it was important to set out across the ocean of the desert southwest in my tiny Toyota craft, some faithful companions, a few stores in my larder and all of my dogs in tow. Other than this, I had no clue. A virgin in unexplored territory. Second chakra territory, down to the sorrel earth of the mountains we drove into, surrounding us on all sides.

At an inn on a gooseneck of the San Juan River I met a group of women on retreat. Formidable, accomplished, irreverent women I came to unknown and left feeling restored. And I have to say, reassured. I drove home certain there is more ahead. It is interconnected and it is rich, with inspiration and beauty, with good wine and razor sharp humor.

Home again, a strand of carnelian stones around my neck, my second chakra is spinning in consummate balance, a whole chunk of relationship energy redeemed and returned to the Universe for a higher purpose.

Storm of thoughts and feelings
The Second Chakra is where self worth, creativity, relationships and pleasure lie –
all of which are weakened by self-criticism and guilt.

Are you so busy taking care of others that you neglect yourself?
