In the stillness before sleep,
even in your absence I see
that I am espoused to you as
the air is wed to the sea.

The wind and the trees
are joined as inexorably
as the rise of my skin
to your fingers must be;

The twilight to the horizon
my sigh to your touch,
and other inevitabilities,
though none wholly or as much.

For my heart to you is coupled
like rock to the cliff face
my bones to their flesh,
salvation to grace.
